GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Eight members of the Knysna fire and rescue department's Sedgefield station recently attended a half-day team-building programme at Swartvlei by Outward Bound as part of their community service and to thank the team for the work they do in the area.
The seven men and one brave woman arrived at the base having been told it would be an outdoor programme, but not much more. So, while they were excited, they were also a little nervous.
They were soon put through their paces and took part in the three different activities.
The first one was the Berlin Wall, where each member had to climb over the wall, with the help of their teammates, but once on the other side, you could not come back. This was quite a challenge but the whole team managed to make it over the wall.

After that came Jacob's Ladder, a challenge between two people who have to find a way to get to the top and ring the bell. Almost all in the team completed this, but because of time constraints, two were not successful. The final challenge was raft-building, but once again, time ran out and they were not able to paddle it.
The firefighters all mentioned not only how much they had enjoyed the programme but how proud they were of themselves for overcoming these challenges. They also spoke about the lessons learned such as leadership, teamwork, communication, planning and decision making.
