KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna branch of the University of the 3rd Age (U3A) will hold its 20th AGM at the Dutch Reformed Church Hall in Sedgefield today, Thursday 24 February.
Local expert Mark Dixon will discuss the role of apex predators in the ocean and the dramatic decline in their numbers with the consequential effect on food resources. Mark has an M Sc in ichthyology and has been a scientific observer on fishing fleets to the Antarctic.
Dixon is however probably better known for his initiative in starting the Strandloper Project three years ago when he realised how recreational fishing at Gericke's Point was resulting in ghost fishing (marine life are caught up in fishing gear discarded on the coast line) and the effect this has on marine species.
Recent deaths of young seals along the coast raised more questions and you can hear some of the answers during his presentation.
The doors open at 09:00 when tea, coffee and biscuits will be served. Members pay R10 and non-members R20.
All are welcome to attend.
