PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - We have found our way to the festive season once more, and no matter how mush we just want to relax, it remains important to remember to be safe and crime-wise wherever we are.
Operations head Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) Otto Olivier supplied some safety tips:
Place of stay
• Place your valuables and passport in a safe place
• Never leave your luggage, valuables or any personal property unattended
• Do not leave valuables or personal items or any purchases and possessions inside your vehicle
• Ensure that all windows and doors that do not have security bars or doors, are closed or locked. Do not leave your front door open. Ensure that electronic devices and other valuables are not accessible through windows
• Never allow strangers into you accommodation
• When you leave your accommodation at night, switch on some interior lights, as well as a TV or radio, so your accommodation looks and sounds occupied
Safety at banks or ATMs
• Avoid using ATMs when isolated or late in the evening
• Do not accept help from strangers or give your pin to anyone
• Be cautious of any person standing too close to you. If you feel uncomfortable or spot suspicious people at the ATM during banking hours, go into the bank and request assistance
• Never leave your card unattended if it is stuck in the ATM machine. Follow the instructions provided at the ATM machine
• Always be extremely careful after you have withdrawn money
Vehicle safety
• Keep your doors locked at all times
• Park in well-lit areas at night
• Do not pick up strangers or hitch-hikers
• Never open your vehicle window when approached by strangers
• Be observant when entering your driveway
• Always have your keys ready when walking towards your vehicle or house
• If you think you are being followed, drive to a busy place or police station
Beach and public pool safety
• Respect our sea creatures and listen to our lifeguards
• Do not swim after drinking alcohol
• Children can drown in shallow water. Watch them constantly
• Read and obey warning notices at the beach and public swimming pools or water park
• Only swim in demarcated areas
• Do not leave your belongings unattended
• Do not walk alone at night on the beach or in remote areas
Entertainment safety
• Only use registered, qualified tour guides
• Never leave any personal belongings unattended
• Do not put your wallet or cellphone on a restaurant table
• When paying your account, always keep your credit card in sight
• Never leave your drinks unattended at bars
Should you be victim of crime
• Stay calm; do not panic
• Do not resist - follow all instructions of assailants
• Try to remember physical and characteristic details of the assailant to be able to give an accurate description
• Report the crime immediately
