PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Last week Plettenberg Bay played host to the Plett Wine and Adventure Festival which in future could rival the wine festivals of Johannesburg and Cape Town.
No fewer than 11 wine estates took part in the festival, which was held at the Sky Villa Boutique Hotel on Friday and Saturday, 16 and 17 December.
Paul Duverge, managing director of Raw Africa Boutique Collection, which includes Sky Villa, and chairman of the Plettenberg Bay Tourism Board, said the aim is to make this festival an annual event during the peak Plett holiday season.
"With Plett being a popular holiday destination for many up-country and Cape visitors, such a festival for wine lovers is certain to find favour," he explained.
"We're combining this with an adventure component - and a beer-tasting element to complete the holiday experience of visitors."
But, it's more than just about providing holiday offerings for tourists.
"Our focus has always been about supporting local business and uplifting our community and it is with this in mind - and as a precursor to the start of peak season in Plett - that Raw Africa Boutique Collection takes great pleasure in hosting, at Sky Villa Boutique Hotel, the inaugural Plett Wine and Adventure Festival. What better way to kick-start the peak season than with wine, music, food and fun!"
Local restaurants and other food and drink-related SMMEs were invited to take part, together with a limited number of top wine estates - showcasing the best of South Africa's wines from established vineyards, ensuring festivalgoers enjoy a sophisticated wine experience.
Some of the top wine estates that participated were Idiom, Mount Vernon, Boschendal, Spier, Bosman Family Vineyards, De Morgenzon, Durbanville Hills, Nederburg Franschoek Cellars and a local wine estate, Bramon.
Duverge said the aim of this annual event, which will take place on the same dates every year, is to highlight Plett as a destination, to celebrate Plett's local heritage and to promote collaboration and a sense of community.
