KNYSNA NEWS - Residents of Hornlee gathered outside the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Monday morning, 23 October, to protest against gender-based violence.
The protest coincided with the bail hearing of a man who stands accused of murdering his former partner, Anita Pyl (55), and was aimed at showing solidarity with the victim.
Pyl was allegedly hacked to death with a panga by her former partner, Gordon Kampher, on Saturday 14 October. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The suspect was taken into custody on the same day and appeared in court on Monday 16 October. Members of the community and those closest to the victim expressed their outrage at the incident and the prevalence of gender-based violence in the Hornlee community, and called for the accused to not be granted bail.
"This community is continuously protesting against the same thing, women don't feel safe and it falls upon deaf ears. That is why the community has taken action into their own hands," said Lynn Kayster of Changes Of Knysna, who helped organise the protest.
The bail hearing was remanded to Monday 31 October.
