Alphas drive maintenance effort in New Horizons

PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - From car club to good Samaritans, the Plett Alphas Crew is taking care of the community they love.

The Plett Alphas Crew is a car club based in New Horizons on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay. They not only love their vehicles, but they love their community and therefore decided to start initiatives to help uplift locals who need a helping hand.

"We are a group of passionate car lovers, but our passion goes beyond our vehicles into our community. We wanted to give back to those who need it and that is why the Plett Alphas decided to do more than just care for our cars," Plett Alphas member Granville Neldritt said.

What the group aims to do is find problem areas or people in need in their community and do something about it. They kicked off their charitable work by cleaning the New Horizons taxi rank. "One Sunday morning our crew came together and cleaned the area, including the walkways, of rubbish and discarded glass."

Their second project was surprising elderly resident Doris Michaels by giving her home a makeover. "She is an elderly resident and have not been able to maintain her home the way she wants to. Her home was very run down and needed some TLC."

The crew, with materials either bought out of their own pockets or sponsored by local businesses, showed up to her home last month and not only cleaned her yard, but also painted her home and completed other maintenance tasks. "Some of the guys also brought food from home, non-perishables, and gave her a food hamper that should last her at least a month."

Neldritt said that this was just the beginning. He explained that, due to the high unemployment rate in the community, many youngsters turned to drugs. "This is a big problem and we hope to, through future initiatives, address this issue. We would like to create alternatives to drugs through, among others, sport and other activities."

The crew is also in the process of organising a car show to show off their other passion.
