KNYSNA NEWS - 45 beneficiaries moved to their new homes in Bloemfontein, White Location, after Knysna Municipality gave them the keys to their new homes.
Despite not having an official handover due to Covid-19 regulations, residents of Bloemfontein were happy to move from their shacks to brick houses.
One of the beneficiaries, Neziswa Khobo, said, "I cannot begin to explain the peace that comes with having a place to call home. I am so grateful to the municipality." Another, Zodwa Rayi, echoed the sentiment. "I am happy and I don't know how to express myself," she said.
According to Knysna municipal spokesperson Christopher Bezuidenhoudt, the beneficiaries are people who previously stayed in informal settlements in the area.
"This is the first 45 houses to be handed over and the municipality will allocate 30 more houses in the next two weeks," he said.
Covid-19 was one of the challenges that delayed the project and, to comply with the social distancing regulations, the beneficiaries had to visit the Housing head-office to sign documentation instead of doing so on-site.
The construction of the houses started in 2019 and the project will see a total of 150 houses costing R24,3-million handed over to residents of Bloemfontein on completion.
