A whole week of elections
The election kicked off on Monday 27 May when South Africans started casting their special votes, while the final outcome of the election will only be announced on Sunday 2 June.
Until then it remains a mystery which parties will have reason to party.
Wednesday 29 May was the big day when 27 672 264 South African citizens were eligible to make their crosses on three ballot papers in the first election in 30 years that could see the ANC lose its outright majority.
In the hope of this happening, calls have come from across the political spectrum, business, media, commentators, human rights groups and civil organisations urging people to exercise their right to vote.
So, a tense few days await South Africans until Sunday.
The IEC was expecting more than two thirds of the electorate to cast their vote. In the Western Cape, 3 310 798 people were registered to vote – just 11,96% of the national voter's roll.
