GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - While Knysna was enjoying the bulk of open vaccination sites this week, it has exceeded its first wave peak of active cases. Bitou has likewise surpassed its first-wave number of active cases.
Back in 2020, the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic was wreaking havoc on the world, and Knysna and Bitou were no exception.
By 24 July both sub-districts' active cases peaked, with Knysna topping out at 338 while Bitou reached 123. This week, both Knysna and Bitou surpassed these active case numbers.
As at Tuesday 13 July, Knysna had recorded a total of 5 643 cases of Covid-19, of which 5 020 have recovered, 175 have died, and 448 are active cases.
This indicates a total of 252 new cases in the seven days between 29 June and 6 July, which equates to a 16,13% increase (+35) from last week. The number of active cases rose by 30,61% (+105) this week, less than the previous week. In both the new cases and the active cases, the rate of increase has slowed this week. The deaths have increased by seven yet again.
In Bitou as at Tuesday, 3 089 Covid-19 cases had been recorded, with 2 857 having recovered, 106 having died, and 126 being active cases. This shows a total of 46 new cases recorded between 29 June and 6 July, dropping by 23 (33,33%) from last week. Having increased by 11,50%% this week, the number of active cases is again the highest in Bitou since 20 January.
With the new cases dropping, the increase in active cases slowed this week.
The death tally has increased by three this week, for the first time since 24 January.
