BUSINESS NEWS - On Thursday 24 May, the u16 Greenwood Bay College (GBC) netball and soccer teams left for their first official sports tour in the Eastern Cape. There was excitement aplenty and the spirit of all the players and coaches was high.
In what seemed a much shorter bus drive than we all had expected, we arrived at St Dominic’s, a large co-ed independent Catholic school in Port Elizabeth. It was a thrilling soccer match and anyone could have won, but unfortunately GBC went down 3-4. Simba Gandane scored all three goals, and although we didn’t get the result we wanted, confidence levels were up.

Our second soccer match of the day and the first (and last) netball match saw us up against Victoria Park High School – a massive government school that has close to 1 500 learners.
Our boys played with grit and were determined to get a win and walked away 3-2 winners! Again, Simba scored all three goals, well done!
The netball girls played out a 9-all draw against a top netball team – fantastic results against a school that is much bigger than ours (only in size, but not in heart) and proof that we can compete against the biggest and best schools. With tired bodies and happy hearts we arrived at our hotel, got ready and enjoyed a team supper at The Boardwalk.
The following morning we woke up to the sound of rain hitting the pavement and waited to hear if our fixtures would still go ahead. Unfortunately, the girls' netball matches scheduled against Pearson and St George’s College both had to be cancelled. This did not dampen the girls' spirit as they were heard all over PE supporting and cheering on the boys in their 1-0 victory over St George’s College.
That night we enjoyed a Spur supper and ice skated at The Bay West Mall, an experience we won’t forget and a fitting end to a successful tour.
Special mention must be made of Leigh Gips, Claire Wright and Chad Wright, the coaches who made this tour possible, and the people who inspire the teams on and off the field.
