GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route has experienced light to moderate but persistent rainfall, with most municipal stormwater systems coping under current conditions.
At this stage, no major life-threatening weather-related incidents have been reported, although authorities remain on high alert.
Evacuations in Oudtshoorn as river levels rise
In the Oudtshoorn municipal area, precautionary evacuations have been carried out in Welgeluk and De Rust due to rising river levels.
Officials say the situation in low-lying areas across the district is being closely monitored, with ongoing assessments to ensure resident safety.
Heavy rainfall recorded in mountainous areas
According to the South African Weather Service, some mountainous regions have already recorded more than 60mm of rainfall between last night and the early hours of this morning.
Further rainfall is expected, raising concerns about potential flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Authorities say they are working proactively with local municipalities to respond to any emerging risks.
Power outages reported as teams assess damage
Electricity outages have also been reported in parts of the region, with assessments currently underway.
Repairs will be conducted by Eskom and relevant municipalities as soon as weather conditions allow safe access.
Schools remain closed amid ongoing weather concerns
Schools across the Garden Route will remain closed until 4 June as a precautionary measure while the weather system persists.
