PLETTENBERG BAY SPORT NEWS – Local sailors proved their mettle during the Robberg Fine Foods Beach Regatta last month when they out-sailed some of the best in South Africa in the three-day race along Plett's coast.
The father and daughter duo, Blaine Dodds and Roxanne Rein, showed why they have raked in many South African and world championship titles over the years.
Once a year Plett's Hobie Beach is transformed into a colourful spectacle as some of the best sailors across the country make their way to Plett for the Robberg Fine Foods Classic Beach Regatta, which has become the premier beach catamaran event in the country.
The 2022 event took place between 16 and 18 December. It is not only enjoyed among sailors, but has become a favourite among residents and visitors who flock to the beach to see the colourful vessels and experience the atmosphere. Spectators get to watch as the boats race "round the cans" - a set of buoys in the bay - or do a long-haul race from the mouth of the Keurbooms Lagoon all the way across to Robberg 5.
Dodds, who has been sailing for almost 50 years, said that he enjoyed sailing with his children and that he and his daughter, who has also been sailing for more than 20 years and started at the age of 13, worked well together, especially on the water - an attribute that is deemed imperative when sailing.
The key to their success was described as "consistency" and focus. In second place was Shaun Ferry and Alison Ball and the final podium place went to William and Pips Edwards.
