Under the guidance and management of Mike Pogodin, the sail trainer at the Knysna Yacht Club (who transported the eight youths and seven boats to the regatta), the Percy Mdala team took the winning spot from six other high schools participating.
Sailing under favourable conditions of wind and weather the Percy Mdala boys scored the first four places and a sixth in the RS Tera category, a third amongst the Lasers and a fourth in the Gypsey class. This gave them overall regatta victory in the high schools category.
In the RS Tera group Sanele Magqaza was first, Aphendule Maneli second, Lukhanya Papu third, Asenathi Rullimente fourth and Sibusiso Mangolothi sixth. In the Laser Radial Mzukisi Manyathi was third, while Bhekumuzi Hani and Sakhumti Funda took the fourth place in the Gypsy class.
George Lakes Yacht Club sailors, James and Sean Vonk did well in the primary school category.
James won the individual Optimist Class trophy and his younger brother, Sean, took second place. Despite not having a third sailor in the team, these two enabled Glenwood House Preparatory, George, to win the primary school category for the fifth consecutive year.
The winning Percy Mdala High School team comprised (from left): Sakhumu Funda, Bhekumuzi Hani, Aphendule Maneli, Mike Pogodin (sail coach), Sibusiso Mangolothi, Aphendule Magqaza, Lukhanya Papu, Mzukisi Manayathi and Asenathi Rulumente.
