KNYSNA NEWS - Young tennis sensation Zoran Meyer has capped a remarkable 2026 season by winning the boys' U12 title at the 2026 Trio TSA Junior Masters in Cape Town this past weekend.
This 12-year-old entered the prestigious tournament as South Africa's no 1-ranked U12 boys' singles player, a position he has held throughout the year.
He added another major national title to his season when he produced an emphatic 6-2, 6-0 victory in the final from 10 to 13 September.
The junior masters brings together South Africa's top eight boys and eight girls in each age group, making qualification an achievement in itself.
The players first compete in a round-robin stage before progressing to the play-offs, semi-finals and final. All matches are played over the best of three full sets, placing a premium on consistency and endurance.
This year's tournament presented additional challenges, as rain and bad weather caused delays. Zoran also had to contend with illness during the event, but continued to battle through the competition before producing his strongest performance in the final.
The junior masters triumph follows an already impressive domestic campaign. Earlier this year, Knysna-Plett Herald reported that Zoran had been crowned South Africa's U12 singles champion at the SA Junior National Championships while maintaining his position at the top of the national rankings.
His progress has also extended well beyond South Africa's borders. During a European tournament campaign in June and July, Zoran competed against some of the strongest junior players in the world. At the prestigious Dub Bowl in Dubrovnik, Croatia, regarded as an unofficial U11 and U13 world championship, he competed in the U13 division despite still being 12.
The tournament attracted about 160 players from 41 countries in 2026, and Zoran advanced to the quarter-finals against an exceptionally strong international field. He continued his Croatian campaign at the Adriatic Cup in Dubrovnik, where he competed on clay against players from around the world. He partnered with a doubles teammate to win the boys' doubles title, adding international silverware to his growing collection.
The European tour exposed him to different playing styles, clay court tennis and the intensity of international junior competition. His performances were further recognised when he was selected for the South African U12 team to compete in Mozambique. Although he was unable to travel with the team, the selection represented another significant milestone.
With the junior masters title now added to his collection, Zoran's 2026 season includes the South African U12 singles championship, the national no 1 ranking, a Dub Bowl U13 quarter-final, an international doubles title and national team selection.
