KNYSNA NEWS - A former Titans Women's Rugby Club captain has been chosen as part of the national sevens rugby squad that will be heading to the Sevens Rugby World Cup and Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Mathrin Simmers, a senior member of the Springbok Women Sevens team, qualified this past weekend for the World Cup in San Francisco next year, as well as the Commonwealth Games in Australia, when she was part of the team who won the Africa Sevens competition held 16 to 17 September in Monastir, Tunisia.
The Lady Blitzbokke – as they are also known – were the tournament favourites and had a reasonably easy run into the final, with Kenya waiting for them at the end.
Simmers and her team will now regroup and soon start with preparations for next year's events.
She made her debut for the national sevens team in 2012 and has appeared in more than 25 consecutive tournaments for the national side.
She was also part of the 2013 team that went to the Rugby World Cup in Russia.
"We as the Titans WRC are proud of Mathrin's achievement and wish her and her team best of luck with preparations for both these major events," said head coach Aschin Klein.
