KNYSNA NEWS - Budding sailor and jiu-jitsu athlete Tyrin Williams has been in red-hot form lately, most recently winning a gold medal at the South Africa ADCC Cabo Tormentosa Challenge.
The SA ADCC Cabo Tormentosa Challenge was held in Cape Town on 27 and 28 January, with jiu-jitsu athletes from right around the country travelling to the Mother City to take part.
Tyrin, who trains with and is a member of the Knysna Titans MMA Club, was taking part in his third competition, and participated in the boys 15-17 years, beginner, 55kg category and weight class.
He was given a bye in the quarter-finals, before defeating his semi-final opponent by submission within only a minute.
In the final he faced a tougher opponent, where it would take him a total of 04:02 to defeat his opponent by submission.
But, Tyrin ultimately triumphed to emerge with the gold medal, a great achievement in only his third competition.
Tyrin, who is home-schooled, has been doing jiu-jitsu for three years and has developed a deep passion for the artform.
At only 16 years old, over and above his brilliant jiu-jitsu talents Tyrin is a well-established sailor, having been sailing for 10 years already.
A member of Knysna Yacht Club, Tyrin has taken part in many competitions and has even done sailing trips from Cape Town to Knysna and vice versa.
His most recent sailing competition was the Knysna Yacht Club Inter-club Regatta, where he finished second in the Hobie 14 category.
He now sets his sights on Western Cape Hobie championships, both coming up in the next few months.
Furthermore, Tyrin has a deep passion for mechanical work with a love for classic cars and aeroplane mechanics.
