PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plett lifesavers flew the town's flag high at the DHL Lifesaving South African National Championships in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape recently.
The event was held on Kings Beach and a strong contingent of nippers (U9 to U14), juniors (U15 to U19) and masters participated. The junior squad took 12th place overall, while the nippers team managed seventh overall out of the 25 clubs that had entered.
Many athletes also came back with medals after having to race "heat after heat" to get to the finals, as some races had more than 40 athletes in the line-up.
One of the top achievers was Emma Neethling, who was selected to represent the Western Cape nippers U14 team.
Another top performer was Liam Stephenson, who, in addition to earning medals at the championships, was named victor ludorum for the U14 boys. He will also represent the Western Cape nippers team in his age category. Hannah de Necker managed to secure third place overall in her age group and will also join the U14 provincial team.
