GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Sports people in the Garden Route area are invited to nominate local sport heroes for the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Awards - Sport Legends 2025.
The provincial Sport Legends Awards are hosted by the department to honour those who have played a role in growing and transforming sport in the Western Cape.
The closing date for nominations is 29 November.
Nominations can be made by submitting a fully completed nomination form, which is available online at www.westerncape.gov.za/cas/sport-legends. The awards event is scheduled for 28 February.
Selection is based on the following guidelines:
1. Nominees should be 55 years or older.
2. Individuals who have contributed to advancing equality, inclusivity or diversity in their sport and in recreation.
3. People who have made a significant contribution to sport and recreation, including:
• Athletes who have set records, achieved historic milestones or represented their country at international events.
• Coaches or mentors who have developed innovative techniques or strategies that changed the way their sport is played.
• Administrators who have pioneered organisational reforms, increased participation or improved the infrastructure and accessibility of sport.
4. People who have made significant contributions to disability sport, the promotion of women and girls and other spheres of sport and recreation.
5. People who are regarded as sport icons in their communities, including:
• Administrators, athletes, coaches or mentors or individuals who have built programmes or initiatives to uplift disadvantaged or marginalised communities.
• Nominees who are known for their community development initiatives, volunteer work or contribution to charitable causes outside their competitive arena within sport and recreation.
6. People who have committed their lives to contribute to sport and recreation.
• Those who have continued to contribute to their sport, even after retirement, through mentoring, coaching or administration.
• Individuals who have dealt with victory and defeat with dignity, setting a moral example for younger generations.
