GARDEN ROUTE HOCKEY NEWS - The Plett and Old Oaks Knysna hockey clubs experienced mixed fortunes in last weekend's fixtures in the Eden Senior Hockey League. Plett's men's team won while their ladies lost in games against George, while Old Oaks' ladies won and their men lost in matches against York on Saturday 13 August.
It was the third round of games in the second half of the 2022 season, which has also been Plett Hockey Club's first in the Eden Senior Hockey League. Ahead of last weekend's games they lay sixth on the men's log and seventh on the ladies log.
The men's team needed a win to distance themselves from George who were only three points behind in seventh place, while the ladies were hoping to overtake NMU George to climb to sixth too.
The two Plett sides took on George Hockey Club at the Knysna High School astro turf with the men's game up first. The first half saw Plett race out of the gates as they bagged six goals in the first 30 minutes alone, with George only managing one.
The second half was far quieter as Plett scored the only goal of the second 30 minutes.
Amazingly, all seven of Plett's goals were scored by different individuals - Jaco du Plessis, Luke McCarthy, Simon Revington, Brad McNamara, Nathan Shrosbree, Jonty Wattrus and Kyle Stemmett.
The ladies game, while not as high-scoring, was close and hard-fought. The scoreline remained 0-0 for the duration of the first half and George made the breakthrough with two goals in the third quarter to go 2-0 ahead.

Plett pulled a lone goal back in the fourth quarter through Chanel Visser and George ran out 2-1 winners. Plett's men remain sixth and their ladies remain seventh on their respective logs.
Their Knysna counterparts, Old Oaks, meanwhile faced tough opposition at the York High School astro turf as they came up against York who top the men's log and are second on the ladies log. Before the weekend, Old Oaks' men were third and the ladies were top of their log.
The ladies played first and goals from Donné de Wet, René Korsten and Christine van der Merwe (two) helped earn them a 4-1 win. Old Oaks ladies remain unbeaten at the top of the log with 10 wins from 10 games.
The men's game was a hard and bitter one for Old Oaks. York ran riot and won the encounter 9-2, with Sean Mackenzie and Geeno du Plessis scoring Old Oaks' goals. Old Oaks remain in third place on the log.
