KNYSNA NEWS - The Garden Route 300 (GR300) is the ultimate mountain bike ride in Knysna.
Limited to 500 riders and lauded as one of SA’s top Cape Epic prep rides one can understand the excitement.
At the launch last night (Thursday, February 26) Patric Mosterd, one of the event organisers, welcomed riders on behalf of Garden Route Events and wished them well for the first leg of 75km through Knysna’s forests.
Councillor Irene Grootboom congratulated organisers on the fifth successful race organised and wished the riders well.
At 07:00 this morning, the riders set off in pouring rain at Quay Four, Thesen Island Harbour Town.
This MTB will continue over the next three days. Famous Riaan Manser and his partner Vasti who are training for the Cape Epic are also honouring this year’s event with their presence. Manser rose to prominence when he became the first person to cycle around the perimeter of Africa.
For over 24 months, alone and unaided, he pedalled a staggering 37 000km through 34 countries, some of which rank as the most dangerous countries on Earth. This dynamic couple made history by taking on the vast waters of the Atlantic. They endured a three-month-and-two-weeks crossing from Agadir, Morocco and landed in Miami, Florida - their final destination, the Statue of Liberty in New York. Today it will be the forests of Knysna and surrounds and conquering the elements!
