GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Old Oaks Knysna Hockey Club kicked off their Eden Hockey Senior League season on a high note with sizeable victories for both the men's and ladies teams against George last weekend.
Old Oaks' two sides faced off against George at Outeniqua High School's astro turf on Saturday 7 May.
The ladies team, hoping to kick-start yet another title defence with a strong showing, was first to play, starting at 14:30.
The game got off to a great start for Old Oaks as Donné de Wet netted the first goal within three minutes and added a second goal in the first quarter to give them a 2-0 lead.
The second quarter saw a further two goals, this time by Charné de Wet, to give Old Oaks a 4-0 half-time lead.
In the third quarter Charné scored two more goals and Donné another one, bringing the score to 7-0. Charné wasn't done though and in the final quarter scored two more goals to secure a double hat-trick while Tanya Pretorius scored one of her own to hand Old Oaks a 10-0 win.
Hoping to emulate the success of their ladies, the men's game got underway at 16:00.
Sean Mackenzie ensured his side got off to a great start by opening the account within the first two minutes.
Darren Kamfer scored his first goal of the game with a minute left in the first quarter to give Old Oaks a 2-0 lead.
Kamfer scored his second goal in the second quarter and Old Oaks held a 3-0 half-time advantage.
The third quarter was Old Oaks' most prolific as Essy Agiels and Sibo Kalani joined Kamfer on the score sheet with Old Oaks now 6-0 ahead.
The final quarter held one more goal each for Kalani and Mackenzie to give Old Oaks an 8-0 victory.
Plett Hockey Club, debutants in the Eden Hockey Senior League, had a tough introduction to life in the league. They faced York High School in George and were beaten 15-0.
It was a similar story in Knysna where the two Wanderers sides hosted NMU at the Knysna High School astro turf. Wanderers men were beaten 17-0 and the ladies lost 10-0.
