KNYSNA NEWS - A new soccer club in Concordia is scoring more than goals; it's tackling crime and keeping local kids off the streets. Slam FC, established last year by Athenkosi Mafele and Nonelwa Qozeni, has already brought together over 95 youngsters from nearby communities, giving them a positive outlet through football.
The founders say their vision goes beyond the pitch: "We wanted to give kids an alternative to drugs, substance abuse, and other anti-social activities," said Mafele, who also serves as the head coach of Slam FC.
Football development
Mafele explained that Slam FC nurtures talent across age groups from U11 to U17, as well as a senior team. Due to limited local facilities, the club often practises on rough terrain, sharing space with multiple teams.
"Sometimes you find more than five teams training in one venue. It's very difficult to achieve what you want if you don't have enough space for sessions," he said.
Looking for support
Slam FC is now calling on local individuals, businesses and the Knysna Municipality for assistance. The club urgently needs a proper training facility, soccer kits and additional training equipment. Currently, all divisions share just one kit, which creates a huge challenge for regular training and preparation for league play.
The team is gearing up to participate in the Knysna Local Football Association's lower division (domestic league) for the 2025/26 season. Mafele fears that without proper jerseys and equipment, kicking off the season will be difficult.
