CHESS NEWS - Cape Town will host one of Africa’s largest international chess tournaments when the Moja Chess Extravaganza 2026 arrives at the Bellville Velodrome from 25 to 30 April.
The six-day event is expected to draw hundreds of players from across South Africa and abroad, including Grandmasters and International Masters competing in FIDE-rated sections.
Last year’s edition attracted close to 700 players, and organisers project participation to grow to approximately 1,000 players in 2026.
Organisers say the tournament continues its mission of giving African players access to elite international competition without the high costs of overseas travel.
Founded by chess development organisation Moja Chess Solutions, the Extravaganza has grown into a flagship tournament in Southern Africa.
The 2026 edition will feature multiple sections for elite players, women, juniors, seniors (for players aged 50 and above), and developing competitors, alongside live global broadcasts using electronic boards that allow spectators worldwide to follow games in real time.
The 2026 tournament introduces two important new additions: a dedicated seniors section and special prizes recognising players with disabilities — reinforcing the event’s commitment to inclusivity and access.
Dr. Jabulani Mokoena, founder of Moja Chess Solutions, described the Cape Town move as a milestone for the event.
“Cape Town provides the perfect international stage for African chess. Our goal is not only to host a tournament, but to build a movement that creates opportunities, inspires young minds, and places Africa firmly on the global chess map.”
Beyond competition, organisers highlight the educational value of chess, citing its links to improved concentration, decision-making, and academic performance. The tournament is part of a long-term vision to strengthen African chess and develop future Grandmasters.
The event is also expected to boost local tourism and hospitality, with players, officials, and families travelling to Cape Town for the week-long competition. Sponsors and media partners are being invited to support the initiative, which blends sport, youth development, and international visibility.
