KNYSNA SPORT NEWS - One of South Africa's largest marathons, the Two Oceans Marathon has taken place every year without fail since 2 May 1970. This year would have been the 51st edition of the race, but runners around the country refused to let the cancellation see their hard work go to waste.
Some Knysna runners were part of this thrust to run their own versions of the marathon at home.
Knysna Marathon Club (KMC) runners Vicky and Marsel Roos decided to take on the 5.6km and 21.1km runs respectively. "I did it in honour of my friends who have trained so hard, made so many sacrifices, dedicated their time to get fit and ready for the start line, but then of course who couldn't run it," Vicky said. She completed her 5.6km run in 39min, and Marsel completed his half-marathon in 1h 47min.
Fellow KMC runner Warren Petersen opted to take on a 25km run after a friend said he doubted that Petersen would be able to complete the run in his own garden. "The toughest part was by far the fact that I wasn't able to pick up good speed, because there's very little room to run," he said. Despite this, he still managed to clock a respectable time of 03:10:00, with his family manning the water station.
