PLETTENBERG BAY GOLF NEWS - Plettenberg Bay golf enthusiasts got into the swing of things in the lead-up to the SA Sunshine Senior Golf Tour taking place this week.
Bitou mayor Peter Lobese hosted his annual Mayoral Golf Day on Sunday 30 September at the Plettenberg Bay Country Club, where the seniors tour was set to take place from 2 to 5 October.
Players, which included industry leaders, were treated to perfect conditions as they all made their way to their respective holes for the noon shotgun start, with Lobese starting his round on the first hole and entertaining the crowd with a long drive down the course.
The Mayoral Golf Day raises funds for the mayor’s bursary fund that helps previously disadvantaged students wanting to study at a tertiary institution.
Due to the link with the seniors tour, for the first time the senior professional players joined the field and played alongside three amateurs in a four-ball alliance, with Jeff Hawkes and his four-ball winning the day.
With significant prize money of R500 000 on the line for the tour, the senior professionals appreciated the early opportunity to get a feel for the course and possibly an advantage for the upcoming event.
An exceptional roll call of former champions, including the likes of John Bland and Hugh Baiocchi, will all have the aim of dethroning last year's champion Mark McNulty during this year's seniors contest.
