KNYSNA GOLF NEWS - Even though Knysna Golf Club's annual club championship's second day of competition rained out on Sunday 15 March, winners were determined due to the first day being completed.
The championship was scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday 14 and 15 March, with three men's and three ladies' divisions set up on a basis of handicaps.
On the men's side, there was the A-division (9 and below), B (10-15) and C (16-30); while on the ladies' side of the competition there was the silver division (17 and below), bronze (18-27) and copper (28-36).
The competition teed off at 09:00 on Saturday, with a full field of competitors getting under way from the 1st and 10th tees. The day welcomed some perfect golfing weather which in turn produced some excellent scores. The draw for Sunday was completed and sent to members in the evening with the leading players scheduled to tee off last.
Tee-off times were also in turn moved forward by an hour because rain was forecast for the afternoon. The second round then had to be halted at about 10:30 with no chance of play being resumed due to the weather. Despite this, the rules of the championship state that if one of the rounds cannot be completed, then the results from the completed round determine the winners.
This saw Linden Herwels crowned as the men's C-division champion, shooting 39 points in his round, while Sue Stavers was the ladies' copper division champion with 43 points. Nigel Hanworth was named the men's B-division champion thanks to a round of 81 gross, with Di Tingle named the ladies' bronze division champion with a gross of 96.
Both top divisions of the men's and women's sections were decided by four shots. The men's A-division trophy had to be shared between Doug Griffin and Johan Greeff who carded rounds of 71, with Glen Moller in third with a round of 75. The women's silver division champion was Lizzy Lightley, who carded a round of 79, four shots ahead of runner-up Sunet Venter.
Griffin was also in turn the Over 50s champion while Eugene Matzner was awarded the Joplin Shield, which was competed by KGC's last 12 monthly medal winners.
