KNYSNA SPORT NEWS - After clinching the 2018/2019 league title, Young Boys FC were hoping to to take top spot at this year's annual Mayor's Cup, but was faced with a resilient African Eagles outfit in the final at Loerie Park on Sunday 11 August.
Young Boys had enjoyed a highly successful 2018/2019 Knysna Local Football Association (KLFA) Domestic League campaign, rounding the league off with a 3-0 victory over Flamingo FC on 7 July, and bringing to an end a 30-game long season.
Young Boys finished the season with 22 wins, five draws, and three losses to stand on 71 points, more than 20 points ahead of their Mayor's Cup final opponents African Eagles who finished the season in sixth place.

African Eagles had overcome Red Eagles in the semifinal, while Young Boys had to rely on a penalty shootout to overcome one of Knysna's two SAB League clubs, CX Celtics. This meant CX Celtics and Red Eagles would meet in the third-place final before the gold final, and it would be a dull affair as Celtics could only field eight players. Red Eagles quickly went up 3-1, and once the third goal was scored, Celtics forfeited the game, handing Red Eagles the bronze medal.
The gold final followed on from the disappointing third and fourth-place playoff, and early on promised to be a much more exciting encounter as both sides traded blows, but two thirds of the way into the first half Young Boys drew first blood. A well-worked team move ended with a shot tucked neatly in the bottom right corner, and this was followed up a few minutes later by a brilliant finish in the top left corner doubling Young Boys' lead, which they held going into halftime.
The second half was just as exciting as the first, with either side creating chance after chance, but yielding no goals for either side, as Young Boys managed to hold on for a 2-0 victory to claim top prize at the 2019 KLFA Mayor's Cup.
