FOOTBALL NEWS - Bidvest Wits have moved off the foot of the Absa Premiership table after they defeated SuperSport United 2-0 in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
The match at Bidvest Stadium saw the Clever Boys claim all three points and move to 15th place - pushing Ajax Cape Town down to the basement - thanks to first-half goals from Bongani Khumalo and James Keene.
Matsatsantsa remains in 12th place after seeing their winless streak extended to seven league matches.
Wits looked full of intent from the first whistle and very nearly claimed the lead in the fourth minute, with Lehlohonolo Majoro first denied by a brilliant save from Riyaad Pieterse, before striking the post with a follow-up effort.
On 16 minutes the Clever Boys claimed the ascendancy through Bongani Khumalo, who controlled a knock-down from fellow defender Thulani Hlatshwayo at a corner kick, before dispatching a shot into the back of the net.
Three minutes later it was 2-0, with Hlatshwayo providing another assist with a header down the right channel which allowed striker James Keene to hold off Azubuike Egwuekwe before firing a low shot through the legs of Pieterse from a tight angle.
