KNYSNA FOOTBALL NEWS – Hornlee-based FC Rebels last weekend continued their dominance of the local football scene by claiming top spot in this year's KLFA Easter Soccer Tournament, overcoming Safa Eden Men's Regional League side FC United in the final on Monday.
Rebels have been in hot form this season, sitting at the top of the Knysna Local Football Association (KLFA) Domestic League standings for quite some time now.
While they do hold a slim lead ahead of La Liga, they have remained in control of the league. For the KLFA Easter Soccer Tournament they were placed in a group with Crossroads, Young Boys and Slow Town.
FC Rebels managed to progress to top of the group, beating Hot Stars 2-1 in the round of 16 stage. They then edged past Sea Birds 5-4 on penalties (1-1 in regular time) in the quarter-finals before beating Young Stars 2-1 to set a final date with FC United. Their opposition in the final had overcome a group featuring Sinako, CX Swallows and JR Stars.
A tough round of 16 clash with defending Easter champs Smuts United saw FC United win 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. FC United then dispatched Voota 4-0 and beat Pine Stars 3-1 to book their spot in the final. Played at the sports fields in Smutsville in Sedgefield, the final was tense and fiercely competed. But it was ultimately the men from Hornlee, who overcame their Regional League opposition 2-1 to take home the KLFA Easter Soccer Tournament trophy for the first time ever.
