PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS – The Kwanokuthula Stadium was filled with excitement on the afternoon of Sunday 2 April, as local boys Plett FC locked horns with three-time DStv Premier Soccer League winners, SuperSport United.
The energy at the stadium was felt all around, as the supporters were split between rooting for their local side and the visitors, commonly known within football circles as Matsatsantsa.
The game got off to a good start for SuperSport United, who created plenty of goal-scoring opportunities early on, but failed to convert them.
SuperSport United players Patrick Maswangayi and Tapelo Maseko were creating scoring opportunities and managed to break through the Plett FC defence with Maseko duly scoring the first goal of the game to make it 1-0. The Plett FC back line were defending well against the strong Matsatsantsa attacks.
Maswangayi netted the second goal and when the whistle blew for half time, the score on the board was still 2-0 in SuperSport United's favour. The second half started on a high with Plett FC looking to score their first goal of the game by using their pace in the wings, Randall Darries on the right and Sibabalo Donker on the left.
They did manage to create more chances but these did not lead to anything substantial. With the game still on, the visiting team gained ever more confidence and played better football in pursuit of their third goal. Plett FC defenders were working overtime, but ultimately the pressure was too much as Mamour Niang netted the third goal for SuperSport United.
SuperSport United were controlling the game displaying good movement on the ball and creating more chances inside the box. They scored their fourth goal through an own goal from a Plett FC defender.
The local boys tried to come back into the game but their luck was not in. The exciting game ended 4-0 with the visiting team using their Premier Soccer League experience to come out victorious.
For the local side the game against the champions was a major learning curve and a great experience.
