On entering this busy township around 17:30 on any given day visitors are struck by the number of soccer players heading to some small patch of grass to play the game they love so dearly.
The Smutsville Sport Field has been under construction for some time now, but that has not stopped these young men and women.
They place cones to demarcate a playing area, usually considerably smaller than a standard soccer pitch.
Some of the makeshift fields are the verge of the road, but motorists entering Smutsville know to keep an eye out for a soccer ball (or player) heading towards them at full tilt.
The Knysna Municipality has indicated that the second phase of the Smutsville sports field upgrade, which will include the laying of astro-turf and the installation of floodlights, is due to commence soon.
Although this makeshift soccer field is no more than a tiny strip of grass, the game is played with the same intensity as on a full-sized pitch. Photo: Fran Kirsten.
