FOOTBALL NEWS - Last season's Safa Eden Regional Men's League champions, Simunye FC, beat the Dysselsdorp side, Moonlight, 1-0 in a Regional League game at the Lawaaikamp Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 12 March. Both teams are fighting their way up to reach the top five on the Regional League table.
The game started on a high note with home team Simunye creating scoring opportunities. Simunye received a penalty and Philani Kunene took the spot kick, but his strike went over the goal.
The Lawaaikamp attackers, Lwandiso Blekiwe and Masilakhe Mtibe, were playing superb football especially towards the end of the first half.
Moonlight players Damian Botha and Barenito Lewis were also looking dangerous on the ball, but no goals were scored in the first half of the game.
The second half saw both teams very concentrated and creating more chances. Yamkela Ntlaba of Simunye tried a shot outside the box but his strike went over the goal. The visiting team tried to control the game from the centre of the field, however, the home team took the game from them with a strong attack that put pressure on Moonlight defenders, and were awarded with their second penalty after dangerous play from a Moonlight defender inside the box.
Simunye captain Sesethu Jack beat Moonlight goalkeeper Cheslyn Lindt and netted the penalty to make it 1-0.
The Dysselsdorp side came back with full force trying to make Simunye defenders panic, but Simunye maintained a solid defence and the game ended 1-0 with the home collecting maximum points.
