KNYSNA NEWS - Richmond City, that were named the winners of the KLFA Super League on 5 September, have been joined by Voota and Crossroads as the sides promoted to the KLFA Domestic League for next season.
The last round of matches in the 2020/21KLFA Super League season had been postponed by a week due to various reasons, but they did go ahead on Saturday and Sunday, 4 and 5 September.
A number of "catch-up" matches had to be played on Saturday before they could get down to the actual business of the weekend on Sunday.
Pine Stars produced the biggest win of the day, and ultimately the weekend, as they dispatched Mthatha City 4-1, while two walkovers were awarded as Young Strikers and Eleven Attackers did not pitch for their first games of the day.
The match between Eleven Attackers and Oupad United later in the day resulted in the highest-scoring fixture of the weekend, ending at 4-4.
But, while everyone was battling it out for pride on Saturday, all eyes were firmly fixed on Sunday as that would be the day that decided who would be the winner of the league - Voota or Richmond City. Voota, that have stood atop the standings for the bulk of the league, needed a win against FC United, but were unable to do their bit and lost out 1-0.
This meant Richmond only needed a draw in their game against FC United at the end of the day to be crowned the champions.
A resilient FC United outfit threatened to put that notion aside, but Richmond held on for a 1-1 draw. This meant that they were handed the crown by the narrowest of margins, edging out Voota by a superior goal difference.
Both sides are promoted to the KLFA Domestic League, but they will, surprisingly, be joined by third-placed Crossroads. Typically only two sides are promoted from the second division of local football to the first.
But in the KLFA Domestic League, Ocean Eleven's participation was terminated after they failed to pitch up for three matches, which opened up an extra space for a team to be promoted from the KLFA Super League. By finishing in third place, Crossroads ensured their promotion.
