KNYSNA NEWS - Local side La liga FC's ambitions of securing a playoff spot took a major blow on Saturday afternoon when they went down 3-2 to in-form Moonlight FC in a Safa Eden Regional League clash at Safe Hub in Knysna.
The top-of-the-table encounter produced an open and competitive contest with both sides pushing for early control.
The home side started brightly, pressing high and creating early pressure, while Moonlight FC threatened through Cornelius Bessie, whose effort went over the bar. La liga responded with a well-worked move into the box, but goalkeeper Jaden Bernadus was alert and helped the visitors clear the danger.
La liga eventually broke through the wings, with Siphosethu Matha finishing clinically to give the hosts a 1-0 halftime lead.
Moonlight returned with renewed intensity after the break, moving the ball quickly through midfield and levelling through Bessie for 1-1. The visitors then took control, with Brendwill Miggels making it 2-1 after sustained pressure.
Despite efforts from Sesethu Luzipo and Siyabonga Gysman, La liga struggled to regain momentum as Moonlight dictated play. Bessie completed his brace to extend the lead to 3-1, leaving the hosts with work to do late on.
La liga pulled one back through Ayamdumisa Bushula to make it 3-2 and came close to equalising when Luzipo fired over from a set piece. Moonlight, however, managed the closing stages well to secure the win.
The result leaves La liga third on 53 points after 29 matches, while Moonlight FC moves top on 63 points after 28 games. Elsewhere in the Safa Eden Regional League, FC United, Madibaz, Fast Eleven and Voota recorded wins as the playoff race intensifies heading into the final stretch of the season.
