PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Local favourites Kwano Diski Kings FC were crowned champions of the 2024 Kasi Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kwano Free Agents FC in the final, held on last Sunday afternoon, 19 October, at Kwanokuthula Stadium.
Awonke Sondaba scored the match-winning goal, sealing the title for Diski Kings in a tense showdown.
The final was fiercely contested, with both teams playing an exciting brand of football. Despite pressure from Free Agents, Diski Kings' solid defence held firm to secure the win.
Eight local teams took part in this year's tournament: QBP Kasi Eagles, Kwano Free Agents, NH Stars, Kwano Diski Kings, Kranshoek Royals, 18 Lions, Qolweni United and Lucky Loser FC. In the semi-finals, Diski Kings defeated Qolweni United 4-1, while 18 Lions edged past Free Agents 4-2.
Centre forward Siyabonga Soduma of Diski Kings was named player of the tournament after scoring six goals throughout the competition. Malick "Muller" Mpunjo of Muller Jnr Sportswear awarded him with a new pair of soccer boots.
Tournament organiser Siyamkele Tsomo praised the tournament's growth, calling for more sponsorship to support community sport and provide local players a platform to develop during the off-season.
