It’s a journey which could potentially stretch right through to the end of the year, and could involve 10 plus matches as South Africa’s representatives travel across the length and breadth of Africa, meeting some of the continent’s giants along the way while also having to encounter some of the lesser known but potentially tricky minnows.
The four clubs can look to Orlando Pirates for inspiration, the Buccaneers having shown the type of courage and commitment that is needed to succeed on the continent after reaching the 2013 CAF Champions League and the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup final.
In the CAF Champions League on Sunday, Chiefs take on Volcan Club de Moroni at Stade de Moroni while Sundowns play Chicken Inn on Saturday at the Luveve Stadium in Bulawayo.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits are the PSL representatives. The Urban Warriors will play Angolan side Sagrada Esperança, while the Clever Boys travel to the Seychelles to take on Lightstars FC.
Ajax’s first leg is on Saturday against Sagrada Esperança at the Estadio Sagrada Esperança while Bidvest Wits play their first leg also on Saturday against Lightstars FC at the Amitie Stadium.
