KNYSNA NEWS - In a final that had spectators on the edge of their seats until the very last whistle, Bodyfitness (Khayalethu) clinched the 2026 Mayoral Cup netball title with a dramatic 26-25 victory over Knysna Loeries on Saturday 4 April.
The contest delivered everything expected of a showpiece final - intensity, precision and relentless pace.
Both sides showcased superb ball handling, slick transitional play, and sharp, quick-fire passing that kept the crowd fully engaged throughout.
With neither team able to assert dominance, the score remained level for three quarters, setting up a nail-biting finish.
In the decisive moments, it was the composure and clinical accuracy of Bodyfitness goal shooter Nelia Mpamba that proved the difference. Under immense pressure, Mpamba held her nerve in the shooting circle, converting crucial opportunities to steer her side to a narrow but memorable win.
Knysna Loeries, however, were far from outplayed and matched their opponents across the court. Their defensive resilience and structured build-up play ensured the final remained a true contest until the closing seconds.
Individual brilliance also came to the fore during the tournament. Shakira Kamfer of Knysna Loeries walked away with both the Player of the Tournament and Best Defender awards.
Teammates Jaylee Sass, Logan Bezuidenhout, Portia Ngetu and Chioma Tagbo were among those who consistently impressed, while Bodyfitness standouts included Anuschia Kiewiets, Esinako Nkangeni and match-winner Mpamba.
In the shooting department, Mpamba shared top honours with Logan Bezuidenhout (Knysna Loeries) as the tournament's best shooters.
Titans Netball Academy's Rakeisha Stevens and Aviwe Nkuzo were named best midfielders after a series of influential performances.
A special moment saw 63-year-old Alet Hardnick of Sedgefield honoured for her longevity, perseverance and continued contribution to developing netball talent.
The 2026 Mayoral Cup once again delivered high-quality netball and showcased the depth of talent in the region - but it will be remembered above all for a gripping final, where one point, and one ice-cool shooter, made all the difference.
