NATIONAL NEWS - It has now emerged that the Hawks have subpoenaed former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel and his then deputy Jabu Moleketi to write affidavits about their role in establishing a South African Revenue Services (Sars) investigations unit.
The move is seen as a fresh effort to close in on former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who was the Sars Commissioner at the time, who remains a vocal critic of President Jacob Zuma.
The revenue service’s special projects unit was disbanded after a series of now retracted reports about its alleged conduct which included spying on politicians and operating a brothel.
Last year, Gordhan was charged with fraud related to a pension payout but several weeks later the charges were withdrawn.
Manuel has confirmed to Bloomberg that he has been subpoenaed to file an affidavit, but because he is out of the country he has referred the matter to his attorneys.
