Update

GEORGE NUUS - Steve Hofmeyr se konsert in die George-stadsaal gaan voort.

Die munisipale bestuurder, Trevor Botha, het pas bevestig dat die konsert, wat vir Donderdag 22 Maart geskeduleer was, wel sal plaasvind.

Dit na die vertoning gekanselleer is nadat die George-munisipaliteit laat weet dat hulle die verhuringsooreenkoms beëindig.

Die besluit om die vertoning te kanselleer het gevolg na 'n brief van die ANC se sekretaris, Faiez Jacobs, aan die burgemeester en die munisipaliteit, waarin hy vra dat die munisipaliteit hulself van Hofmeyr distansieer.

Die konsert, die bekenstelling van Hofmeyr se nuutste album, is ten bate van 'n Christelike skool in George.

"The DA noted reports today that the George Local Municipality had withdrawn permission for a local school to host a fundraising concert at its City Hall next week. This decision had been taken after there was an outcry from certain sectors of the local community condemning the municipality's initial decision to allow this event, at which Steve Hofmeyer was said to be performing.

"The Municipality has revoked this decision as it goes against the principles freedom of association as enshrined in our Constitution.

"While the DA does not support or endorse Hofmeyer’s political views, it is important that we do not fall into a trap of shutting down spaces for people to interact, like the Apartheid government did. In 1994 South Africa took a collective pledge that we will always be guided by the Constitution, even when our views differ.

"We applaud the Municipality for making a principled decision in the regard and allowing the school to host its fundraising concert and invite whomever they please."
