Figures recorded in October have revealed that 98 percent of inmates living with HIV in Gauteng are on antiretroviral treatment.
The department says it wants to make sure that even former detainees remain on treatment once they leave the prison.
Gauteng officials say with all the developments made around HIV and AIDS in prisons, they are still struggling to ensure that all those on antiretrovirals continue treatment, even after their release.
There are hopes that stronger partnerships with the health department in various municipalities will see improvements in the monitoring and evaluation of former inmates.
