KNYSNA NEWS AND VIDEO - A viral video circulating on social media has prompted a police investigation into a roadside altercation in Knysna, where cases of reckless and negligent driving, as well as a counter case of common assault, have been opened.
Police confirmed that the incident occurred at about 17:00 at the corner of the N2 highway and George Rex Drive on Tuesday 21 April. The video appears to show a confrontation between a member of the public and a traffic officer.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, an investigation into the matter is currently under way and no arrests have been made at this stage.
“The dockets will be submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority upon completion of the investigation for a decision on further action,” the statement read.
In a statement posted on its Facebook Page, Knysna Municipality said it strongly condemned the attack on Traffic Warden Ernest Nqoko, affectionately known to residents as “Smiley”, who was injured in a road rage incident on Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Thando Matika condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as unacceptable.
“Our municipal staff serve the community with dedication and professionalism. They cannot and will not be subjected to abuse or violence while performing their duties. Anyone who travels along George Rex Drive will have witnessed Smiley’s passion, infectious energy, and ever-present smile over the years. He is truly one of our very best,” he said.
Matika further noted that this was reportedly the fifth time Nqoko has been struck in similar circumstances, calling it “devastating and traumatic”.
“No one should have to endure such repeated harm. We call on all road users to exercise patience, respect and restraint, particularly during high-traffic periods. Our roads must be spaces of shared responsibility, where every life is valued and protected,” he said.
He urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Knysna police station.
