PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A Plettenberg Bay homeowner was stabbed in the head several times by assailants during an early-morning home invasion.
Plettenberg Bay police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse said the incident happened in Mintos Ledge Road at about 02:35 on Saturday 11 August.
“The owner of the house was woken up by the screams of his wife in the lounge area. He immediately rushed to her side and noticed two unknown men in his house. One carried a knife,” Pieterse said.
One of the suspects was found in the study where he was busy removing cellphones, a leather wallet with cash and bank cards from the woman’s handbag.
“The wife managed to activate the home’s panic alarm while her husband fought the suspects off. He was stabbed twice and sustained head injuries during the scuffle.”
Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) operations head Otto Olivier added that the police, Smhart Security, the Plett Rapid Response Unit and the Plett K9 unit responded immediately and cordoned the area off. The area was swept by various security stakeholders including Blackie, the PBCPA support dog.
One suspect apprehended
Olivier said a suspect was spotted trying to jump over a garden fence in the area. “The suspect tried to flee the scene but fortunately he ran into the Plett Rapid Response Unit where he was quickly apprehended. He was handed over to the police. A weapon was found on scene.”
Olivier added that shortly thereafter more suspects were spotted on camera in the Poortjies area. “They disappeared into the bushes when various vehicles responded including the Knysna police K9 unit.”
During a meticulous sweep of the area it was discovered that two houses had been burgled prior to the assault, Olivier said.
Pieterse said the suspect arrested was 34-year-old Patrick Malgas. He appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday 13 August. The matter was postponed to 24 August for a formal bail application.
The second suspect is still at large and police are investigating a case of house robbery and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
