KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna-based Southern Stars women soccer team kept their title hopes alive with a dominant 4-0 victory over Lidz Ladies last Saturday.
The thrilling top-of-the-table Regional League clash was played at Loerie Park Stadium in Knysna. Likhona Tyelo netted a hat-trick, while Okuhle Maku also got on the scoresheet for the Southern Stars, who remain top of the log.
The match kicked off at a rapid pace, with both teams displaying their technical ability as they looked for the opening goal. Southern Stars wasted no time in launching an aggressive attack, testing the defensive line of Lidz Ladies early on.
Despite their best efforts, Lidz struggled to contain the pressure, with Tyelo breaking the deadlock and putting the home side 1-0 up.
The Plett-based side, Lidz Ladies, responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but Southern Stars continued to dominate possession and territory.
Tyelo doubled the lead, making it 2-0 and further putting pressure on Lidz's defence. Lidz managed to hold firm for the remainder of the first half, and the whistle blew with the score at 2-0 in favour of the Stars.
The second half saw both teams continuing to play an attacking style of football, with Lidz throwing everything forward in search of a goal. However, the Stars remained resolute, and their offensive threat was relentless.
Maku extended the lead to 3-0, finishing coolly after beating the Lidz goalkeeper. With their backs against the wall, Lidz's defence struggled to cope with the sustained pressure, and Tyelo completed her hat-trick with a well-taken goal to seal the 4-0 win.
Lidz continued to press in the final minutes, but were unable to break down Southern Stars' solid defensive line.
Despite their best efforts, no further goals were scored, and the match ended with the Southern Stars claiming a comfortable 4-0 victory and securing three points at home.
