PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Shabby Fufu Lifestyle Farm, a beloved destination for locals and visitors since its opening in March 2021, has been left in ruins after a devastating fire late Sunday night, 7 December.
According to the owners, the blaze broke out at approximately 23:00. Emergency services responded swiftly, preventing injuries and ensuring all staff and animals were safe.
Preliminary investigations indicate an electrical circuit issue or fault may have been involved, though the cause of the fire is yet unknown.
Investigators, including an insurance assessor, were on the scene on Monday and Tuesday as part of the ongoing inquiry. The owners have announced that the farm will remain closed until further notice.
In a statement released on Monday morning, the Shabby Fufu team expressed "immense heartbreak and overwhelming shock" at the loss of the farm, which had become known for its tranquil setting, rustic charm, and family-friendly atmosphere. "We are deeply thankful for the rapid response of emergency personnel," the statement read, "and profoundly grateful that no lives were lost."
The owners extended heartfelt appreciation to the farm's loyal supporters, many of whom have been regular visitors since Shabby Fufu first opened its doors.
"Your unwavering support has carried us since the beginning, and it will continue to carry us through this tragedy," they wrote. "We will rise again, like a phoenix."
Because of the extensive damage, Shabby Fufu confirmed that it will not be able to operate during the festive season - a period that traditionally draws heavy foot traffic to the popular venue.
Despite the loss, the team has shifted its focus toward community connection. In a follow-up message addressed to the "Shabby Fufu family" on its Facebook page, the owners invited supporters to share photographs, personal stories, and cherished memories of their moments on the farm - anything that made the farm meaningful to them.
"Our hearts are still heavy … but we refuse to let the flames be the final word," they said. "Your memories will help keep the spirit of Shabby Fufu alive while we rebuild.
"Thank you for your love, support, and the beautiful pieces of your lives you've shared with us. We appreciate you more than words can say."
