"I want to feed as many poor people as I can. This evil called starvation is staring at us from so many hollow and pleading eyes - how can we just ignore it and carry on with our lives?" she asks.
This desire to help took shape in 2003 with a project that started through a church called Gospel Park. The senior pastors, Brian Sass and his wife, Yvonne, opened their doors to accommodate and support Elaine’s quest to feed the poor. At this stage the organisation ran a soup kitchen feeding 60 people on a voluntary basis. The need for food increased rapidly and soon moved beyond the boundaries of the church.
"We began working from homes to reach and feed more people," explains Elaine. Two wonderful women, Rosy ‘Tinki’ Davids and Frieda ‘Aunt Babie’ Davids volunteered their New Horizons (Plettenberg Bay) homes and their time for this purpose.
The number of needy people continued to grow rapidly during the first year of the project. Children, the elderly, unemployed, disabled, andthose with HIV, AIDS and TB all needed to be fed.
In 2006 Building The Walls was officially registered to enable them to raise funds necessary to sustain its efforts. This small and unsung organisation battled its way through the streets of Plettenberg Bay and into the hearts of the community.
From humble beginnings Building The Walls grew to become one of the life cords in the heart of New Horizons, offering soup kitchens, maintaining food gardens, distributing food parcels and doing whatever needs to be done to keep hunger at bay.
In 2010 they moved to the New Life Centre, which has an office and a kitchen, where more than 107 people receive a nutritious meal everyday for five days per week.
Today Building The Walls supplies 10 satellite stations in the greater Bitou area, including Kwanokuthula, New Horizons, Qolweni/Bossiesgif, Kranshoek, Wittedrift and Kurland. They successfully feed 9 000 meals to 948 people every month!
Building The Walls also distribute more than 60 food parcels monthly.
Their next event is a Christmas meal on December 24 for those who will have absolutely nothing else to look forward to this entire festive season.
"Many people do not know what they will eat on Christmas day and this organisation provides a real treat on the day before Christmas.
"We lovingly challenge people yet again to open up their hearts and their wallets and to contribute to helping us bring cheer to people who face the terror of starvation on a daily basis Thank you for caring and sharing!"
The Christmas meal will take place in the Community Hall of New Horizons, Plettenberg Bay at 12:00.
