GARDEN ROUTE NEWS AND VIDEO - Firefighting crews are still battling the wildfires in the Ruiterbos area between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.
According to the Garden Route District Municipality, the northeastern flank of the fire (high up in the mountain and hanging over Mooihoek), is still active.
A reconnaissance flight revealed this to be the only area uncontained and for this reason, water bombing commenced shortly after. Ground crews are trooped into the area for mopping up.
The northwestern flank, adjacent to Robinson Pass is contained and is receiving mopping up. The area is smoke-filled due to heavy fuels still burning out within the perimeter.
One area on the most southernly flank and adjacent to an avocado farm is smoldering and is being attended to by a strike unit.
Stakeholders include GRDM Firefighters, CapeNature, Department Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Cold Stream Timbers, Working on Fire and the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association.
If you spot a veld or wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or via WhatsApp at 081 709 5193.
