PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Tragedy struck in Pine Trees in Plettenberg Bay on Monday when an off-duty police officer allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend before turning his service pistol on himself.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said the incident claimed the lives of Sphokuhle Gwexa (23) and Anela Memani (29).
Memani was a police officer stationed at the Plettenberg Bay police station.
He added a preliminary investigation revealed that the incident took place at about 17:00 on Monday 23 March when Memani met his girlfriend in the street near her house.
"It is alleged they were involved in an argument when the officer pulled out his service pistol and discharged multiple shots, hitting Gwexa all over her body. She died instantly. Thereafter he turned the gun on himself and shot himself through the head. He also died on the scene," Pojie said.
He added police responded after a resident reported the incident upon hearing the gunshots. "The community member safeguarded the scene until police arrived."
Pojie said forensic experts and detectives combed the scene for clues and confiscated the firearm for ballistic tests.
"Autopsies will be performed on the bodies," Pojie concluded.
