PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Christmas Day celebrations in Plettenberg Bay were marred by the tragic murder of a local teenager and the subsequent murder of her alleged killer.
Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, says police were called to a scene in Raymond Mhaba Street in Qolweni at 07:30 on Christmas morning.
"On arrival we found the body of an 18-year-old victim in her bed." It is alleged the young woman, Asemahle Williams, was also raped.
"Circumstances surrounding her death forms part of an ongoing police probe," Spies said. Later
on the same day, at about 11:50, police were alerted about a vigilante attack in Mlanjeni Street in Qolweni.
"A group of people dispersed when police approached and the body of a 26-year-old man was found burned beyond recognition."
The man was a possible suspect in the murder of the teenager.
"No arrests have been made. Investigations into both incidents continue." Eden Cluster police management strongly condemned the unlawful vigilante action which resulted "in the gruesome scene". "Vigilante attacks as well as unlawfulness will not be tolerated. We urge the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. The police will not hesitate to take decisive action against persons involved in vigilantism.
"Investigators should be given the necessary space to investigate any matter without any fear, favour or prejudice. Those found on the wrong side of the law will be arrested and brought to book," management said.
Following the shocking news of the vibrant young woman's murder, locals raised funds to assist the Williams family to bury their loved-one.
