KNYSNA NEWS - Mayor Levael Davis visited the Knysna Provincial Hospital last week to recognise the commemoration of International Nurses Day.
It is held annually on 12 May, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a nursing doyenne and formidable woman who changed the face of nursing in the 19th century.
The theme for 2022 is, "A voice to lead - invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health".
During his visit to the hospital, Davis told the nursing staff that they are really at the forefront of health in the greater Knysna.
"Today I wish to thank every single one of you," he said. "Thank you for listening to the voice that led you to this profession, the voice to lead, and diligently do your jobs with so much heart."
The mayor shared a personal recollection of the birth of his daughter and how a nurse ushered her in and calmed his wife.Knysna Mayor Levael Davis addresses those in attendance at the Knysna Provincial Hospital event. Photo: Knysna Municipality
"I will never forget that. I am not sure you understand how amazing you are. How you diligently do your jobs regardless of circumstances or challenges."
The day also marked nurse Louisa Plaatjies' 40 years of service. She received her special commemorative gifts with grace as her colleagues applauded her.
"I have dedicated my entire life to nursing, and I have zero regrets, and today I feel like a queen," she said. The nurses were spoilt with treats, games, and beautiful music.
Davis also visited Vermont Old Age Home on the day. Speaking there, he again said that nursing is a calling and encouraged the staff to always follow the voice that led them to this selfless profession.
"I am certain that at some point in life through your profession and passion, you became a saving grace and a beacon of hope to someone," he said.
The nurses at Vermont also paid homage to one of their own who passed away last year, Geraldine Nell, and many colleagues before her.Nurses and staff from the Knysna Provincial Hospital attended the special commemorative event. Photo: Knysna Municipality
