KNYSNA NEWS - Carla Collins, a Grade 9 learner at Knysna Montessori School, was chosen as the only representative of the Western Cape Orienteering Club, to join nine students from other SA orienteering clubs. Together they formed the SA Orienteering Youth Squad and visited Sweden in April this year, for 12 days of training and racing.
Sweden is one of the leading orienteering countries in the world and the sport is learnt from Grade R in Swedish schools.
Working with their coach, the squad received specific training at various schools in the area. Following this, Carla and two other SA learners from squad participated in different races over the weekend, the main race being the 10 Mila, which is the second-largest orienteering event in Sweden, drawing over 13 000 participants.
Carla describes orienteering as an “adult treasure hunt” and says it was a superb learning experience. We are proud of her participation in the Swedish event with her fellow South African students. Congratulations to them all, and special congratulations to our Carla.
